BOOKS

Emerson Elementary was chosen as the next school in which Riverside AAUW will donate books. It was decided that books be donated directly to the teachers. When books were donated to the Fremont library last December, it required additional work for the already-busy librarian.  With her reduced hours, by May, she still had not had enough time to take care of the paperwork for the placing of the books in the school’s library.    It was recommended that the books be given directly to the teachers.

Russ Bouton is the principal of Emerson. He informed me that there would be 5 Kindergarten classes this coming year not exceeding more than 25 students per class.      He would like to see each teacher being given 25 books. Our group would be giving 125 books to the “K” classes for the coming year. Mr. Bouton mentioned that the gift will be mentioned at the School Board meeting.  Anyone who wishes to help with this project can donate Kindergarten level books or money to buy books.  For more information you can click HERE.

Forty-seven years ago, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the historic Voting Rights Act(VRA) into law. But, the law is not just history; it remains critical to ensuring that every American can cast a ballot and have it counted. Even as we celebrate the VRA, unnecessary and costly new state voting laws remind us that voter suppression and intimidation are still a problem.

It’s My Vote. I will be heard !

When Americans head to the polls in November, the election isn’t just about the day-to-day battles between candidates. It’s about voters like you. This election will impact you and your community. It’s your chance to stand up for what you believe in – and make sure your family and friends do, too.  This could be the most important election ever. This election is about jobs, environment, fair pay, health and education, and other issues important to women.  So let’s get women registered and get out the women’s vote.

Generation Gap on Voters Preferences

Poll Finds Generation Gap on Voters’ Preferences for Obama, Romney
A recent USA Today/Gallup poll indicates that millennials favor President Obama over presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in the upcoming election, while senior citizens favor Romney. Millennials and seniors in the poll also named different issue priorities: For millennials, the top issue was creating good jobs, while seniors ranked that issue sixth. In contrast, seniors said that protecting Social Security and Medicare was the second most important issue for them, while millennials ranked that issue seventh.

“Meet me at the Marcy,” on Sunday, July 22, from 5 to 7 PM, was an event that delighted the hearts and minds of the library lovers who came.  The Marcy, a jewel of our Library System, was a perfect setting for a fund raiser for the Libraries.      The gala organizers displayed their expertise in the relaxed, festive atmosphere they created, the yummy food, and cool drinks at different locations in the library, the joyful, familiar music by the brass quartet, and, of course, the interesting people present, which included the Library Director, current City notables, and future City leaders.  The silent auction in the center section of the Library gave attendees ample opportunity to peruse and bid on a variety of options that featured four very different selections of visual art among many other things.  Kudos to our own classy AAUW President, Barbara Purvis, for encouraging our attendance and also for providing the highest bid on one of the auction offerings.  It would seem that she cares very much for libraries and always has the needs of her many organizations on her mind.

This fund raiser at such a lovely library with interesting, like-minded people was one of the most rewarding two hours a library/book lover could possibly spend on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

Dear Riverside AAUW Branch,

Thank you for giving me this glorious opportunity to attend this amazing college.  This scholarship has given me an opportunity to experience some once in a lifetime moments, and getting an idea of what it is like to meet new people from all over.

Some items that we’ve done this week are building bridges.  I learned that a bridge must have a truss or else it will start collapsing.  Something I learned about in marine biology were sharks.  For example, did you know that you could earn a lot about a shark just by examining its teeth?  The shape of the shark’s teeth depends on what they eat.  While I’m discussing the marine biology topic, I would like to throw out a little fact.  Sea stars spit their stomach out on top of their food, let the stomach digest their food, then they gobble their stomach right back up.

Now that I’ve told you about some things that I learned I just want to say thank you.  I also want to reassure you that you haven’t wasted money be sending me here.  That money has given me an opportunity to realize my interest in marine life.

Sincerely yours,

Andrea Galvez

Dear AAUW Riverside Chapter,

I am really enjoying Tech Trek.  It has been so fun!!  I had a blast.  My favorite part was when we went on the boat.  I was soaked!  I was inspired by the forensic pathologist.  I hope that one day I could become a police woman or something in that field of forensics.  Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to attend Tech Trek.  I hope that I can have this experience again.

Sincerely,

Kaylen Gomez

Dear AAUW Riverside Chapter,

I would like to thank you for raising funds so that I could go to Tech Trek  This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and because of you, I was able to attend this camp.

Tech Trek has given me tools that will help me excel in math and science, as well as help me get into a great college.  Not only has Tech Trek given me educational skills, but it has also given me social skills.  I have met and come close friends with many girls.  I am usually shy, but this camp has shown me hoe to come out of my shell and meet new people.

Once again, I would like to thank you for all you have done to get me to Tech Trek.  I appreciate how much money you have raised so that not only me, but one hundred an eighty other girls, could experience the college life, meet new people, and understand the importance of women in the field of science.

Sincerely,

Alyssa Saldana
